There are many ways you can become a friend of Dunkard Creek. As part of our watershed—any area of land with rivers and streams running through it—your daily habits can have a substantial impact. You can help simply by remembering to:
• conserve water by turning off the water while you brush your teeth, reducing the amount of detergent you use or watering lawns and gardens in the early morning or late evening.
• dispose of all waste properly. Cooking grease should always go in the trash, not the drain. When you purchase new tires, have the store recycle your old ones. (In a recent two-year period, over 3,000 tires were removed from Dunkard Creek.)
Batteries should be saved and taken to a store that recycles them to avoid mercury in our groundwater. Obtain a garbage service for your household trash.
• recycle what you can. It helps the environment and benefits our local Greene Association of Retarded Citizens (GARC).
• use organic fertilizers and lawn products and/or limit the amount of lawn chemicals you use.
• check your local newspaper for volunteer clean-up activities, especially in the warmer months, along Dunkard Creek. An estimated 18%* of America’s litter ends up in our streams, so there is always work to be done.
• never dump something you don’t want, whether it’s a single bag of trash or an old appliance. It’s illegal and costs you, the taxpayer, a lot of money in state and local clean-ups. Look in the phone book, call around, and find someone to take what you don’t want. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure!
• start a compost pile.
• keep or plant a line of shrubs or trees along the stream on your property. It stops erosion and creates a natural filter for any run-off entering the water.
